Solar accessories
Small but indispensable parts that connect and protect the entire photovoltaic array come in useful with every installation. Solar accessories include MC4 connectors and couplers, solar cables and extensions, fuses and their holders, crimping and mounting tools, as well as cable glands and cable ties. They are chosen according to the connector type, the cable cross-section and the current load, so that the connection of the panels, the inverter and the battery is safe and reliable.
Solar accessories
Every photovoltaic array needs, besides the panels, the inverter and the battery, also a range of connecting and protective parts, without which the components cannot be joined safely. It is precisely these elements that hold the whole system together — they carry the current, protect the conductors and make mounting easier. Even though they are often inconspicuous and inexpensive parts, their quality and correct choice decide the reliability and safety of the whole installation, which is why it is worth paying attention to them.
Most often MC4 connectors and couplers are needed, which link the panels in series or in parallel and ensure a watertight and safe connection. Connectors of the same system are chosen, since products from different brands are not always compatible with one another. Belonging to them are solar cables with UV-resistant insulation and extension leads in various cross-sections, from 4 to 10 mm² depending on the current and the length of the run, and they are complemented by splitters, reducers and end caps for connection to the inverter or the controller.
The protection of the conductors is ensured by fuses and their holders, surge protectors and earthing elements, which prevent short circuit, overload and damage during a storm. For mounting, crimping pliers for connectors, stripping tools and wrenches are useful, along with cable glands, conduits, cable ties and clips, with which the conductors are fastened and arranged. The right tools guarantee that the connections are firm and well conducting.
In the choice, the compatibility of the connectors, the cross-section and length of the cable and the rated current that the parts must safely carry are decisive. It is worth harmonising the connector type across the whole installation and allowing a small margin for cross-section and length, so that the conductors do not heat up unnecessarily. Well-chosen solar accessories simplify the installation, extend the life of the conductors and reduce the risk of outage and fire caused by a poor connection.
