Lawn mowers and brushcutters
Petrol and battery machines for mowing the lawn and maintaining overgrown areas. Lawn mowers and brushcutters include rotary and cylinder mowers, self-propelled models and lawn tractors, robotic mowers, as well as line trimmers and brushcutters with a metal blade. They differ mainly in the power source — petrol, mains electricity or battery — and suit plots of various sizes as well as work in dense, uneven growth.
Lawn mowers and brushcutters
Regularly mowing the lawn and thinning out overgrown edges are among the most common garden jobs, and powered machinery handles them far faster than hand tools. Lawn mowers and brushcutters cover both — from flat grassed areas to slopes, ditches and the spots around trees, fences and walls that the mower cannot reach. The choice depends on the size of the plot, the nature of the growth and how far the power supply reaches.
For continuous grassed areas, mowers are used — rotary models with and without drive, cylinder mowers for short ornamental lawns, self-propelled lawn tractors and ride-ons for large plots, and robotic mowers that look after the lawn on their own. Mulching models finely shred the cut grass and return it to the sward as natural fertiliser.
Where the mower no longer suffices, brushcutters and line trimmers take over. The trimmer with a line head evens out edges, cuts around trees and beds and lower grass, while the brushcutter with a metal blade also copes with dense weeds, saplings and woody growth. They also differ in how they are carried — a shoulder harness and an anti-vibration system make longer work easier.
The power source is decisive. Petrol machines offer the highest performance and independence from a socket and suit large, demanding areas, but they need fuel and engine maintenance. Electric models are lighter, quieter and cheaper, but tied to a cable. Battery machines combine freedom of movement with quiet running and, within a single brand, often share the battery across the mower, trimmer and other tools. Besides performance, it is worth watching the cutting width, weight, noise level and the availability of lines, blades and spare parts.
