Home electrical supplies

Sockets and switches come in various design ranges, so you can match them to your interior. Alongside classic single versions, you'll find double sockets, sockets with USB ports for charging your phone, dimmers and two-way switches for controlling a light from two places. For bathrooms and outdoors, choose IP44-rated sockets that are protected against splashing water.

Lever connectors provide a safe way to join wires, replacing screw terminals and accepting conductors of different cross-sections. Cables can run in trunking along the wall surface or in flexible conduit under the plaster, with branch connections hidden in junction boxes. Circuit breakers and RCDs in the consumer unit protect circuits against overload, short circuits and electric shock.

Before any work, switch off the relevant breaker and confirm the circuit is dead with a voltage tester. Leave connections to the fixed installation and any work on the consumer unit to a qualified electrician. Fitting cable trunking or child-safety socket covers is something you can do yourself.
