Garden protection nets

Protection nets are a practical helper in growing fruit, vegetables and ornamental plants. They prevent birds from pecking the harvest or insects from damaging it and protect sensitive plants from sun and bad weather. Garden nets differ in mesh size, material and specific purpose.

Anti-bird nets have larger mesh and are spread over fruit trees, shrubs, strawberries and beds. Insect nets, by contrast, have a fine structure that prevents butterflies, aphids and other pests from reaching the plants. Shade nets let through only part of the sunlight, lower the temperature and protect from scorching, while anti-hail nets soften the impact of hail. A separate group is formed by fine nets over ponds and against falling leaves.

The material is usually a durable and UV-stabilised polyethylene or polypropylene that lasts outdoors for a whole season and longer. The nets are supplied in various widths and lengths, often also on a roll from which the required piece can be cut.

When choosing, start from the purpose — you need one mesh density against birds and another against small insects. Consider the size of the protected area, the method of fastening and the desired degree of shading. Tension and anchor the net well so that it does not give way in the wind and no gaps form through which pests could get inside.
