The foundation is an instrument cable with 6.35 mm jack plugs, connecting a guitar, bass or keyboard to an amp or audio interface. Good shielding cuts hum and interference, a durable outer jacket handles frequent coiling and an angled plug suits guitars with a side-mounted output jack as well as effects pedals.
On a pedalboard, short patch cables link the individual effects. Flat low-profile plugs save space, and the shorter and better the cables, the less treble and dynamics you lose from the signal.
Wireless transmitters give you freedom of movement on stage and in the rehearsal room. The transmitter plugs straight into the instrument's output and the receiver into the amp or an effect, with the signal sent cable-free, usually in the 2.4 GHz or UHF band. Modern systems have almost unnoticeable latency and a built-in battery that lasts several hours of playing and charges via USB.
