Rodent and rabbit cages
Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and rats need enough room to move, a shelter to sleep in and a base where the bedding is easy to change. Rodent and rabbit cages include wooden hutches with a sleeping area and run for rabbits and guinea pigs, tall multi-level wire cages for rats, hamster cages with tunnels or transparent walls, and folding pens made of clear panels or wire mesh.
Rodent and rabbit cages
The hutches for rabbits and guinea pigs have a fir wood frame with metal mesh. The 110 × 50 × 86 cm model is divided into a shaded sleeping area and an open run, with two ramps and braked wheels. The two-level 90 × 53 × 59 cm hutch links the floors with an internal ramp and has a door with a safety lock, while the hutch with a sleeping box of the same size has a ramp, a platform and wheels. All three open from the top, and the removable tray slides out without taking anything apart.
Tall wire models for rats and other rodents have 1.27 cm bar spacing that the animals cannot squeeze through. They come in heights from 86.5 cm to 175.5 cm with one to four levels and ramps, and the taller ones also have a hammock. They stand on a wheeled base, some with a storage shelf. The grid floor above the plastic tray keeps bedding and mess below the level the animals move on, and the double doors make cleaning easier.
For hamsters there are multi-level models measuring 46 × 30 × 58 cm with tunnels, a house and an exercise wheel. The 0.9 cm bar spacing suits small animals, and the 8 cm deep plastic tray holds a layer of bedding. The 96 × 47 × 50 cm cage has a glass base and chew-resistant acrylic walls, a wire lid with a handle and a metal frame on wheels. The continuous floor without levels suits hamsters that dig and build burrows.
Folding pens provide a run outside the cage. The 35 × 35 cm clear panels join with clips without tools, and 6, 8 or 10 pieces make a pen of 70 × 35 cm, 70 × 70 cm or 105 × 70 cm. The black wire mesh pens with 1.5 cm spacing measure 142 × 72 × 36 cm or, with two rows of panels, 142 × 71 × 71 cm, have a door and non-slip pads, and their shape can be changed.
The size of the animal and the way it moves matter most when choosing. Rabbits and guinea pigs mainly need floor space and a shelter, rats need height and levels to climb, and hamsters need narrower bar spacing and a deeper layer of bedding. The cage is best placed on a flat, stable surface away from direct sunlight and draughts. A pen adds space for daily exercise outside the cage.
