The difference from traditional neon is significant. Gas-filled glass tubes need high voltage, break easily and get hot. LED neon is a flexible LED strip in a silicone or PVC sleeve that diffuses the light evenly, so the result looks like one continuous glowing line. It is lightweight, safe to touch, barely gets warm and uses only a fraction of the energy.
Most signs are mounted on a clear acrylic backboard that holds the shape and has pre-drilled holes for wall hanging. Smaller decorations often have a stand, so they can sit on a shelf, a chest of drawers or a desk. Power usually comes from a USB cable, a plug-in adapter or batteries, which means the decoration can go where there is no socket nearby.
When choosing, it is worth looking at size, light colour and controls. Some models have a dimmer or remote control, while others can switch colours and lighting effects. Warm white feels cosy in a living room or bedroom, while bold colours such as pink, blue or purple stand out in a games room, a café or at a party.
LED neon signs and decorations are mainly designed for indoor use. For outdoor use or in a bathroom, choose a model with a suitable ingress protection rating, such as IP65. Thanks to their low power use, they can stay on for several hours a day without a noticeable effect on the electricity bill, and LED lifespan is usually quoted in tens of thousands of hours.
