PC power supplies

Power supplies for desktop builds — in ATX for standard cases and SFX or SFX-L for compact ones, in fixed-cable, semi-modular and fully modular versions.

Pick the wattage with headroom — add up the draw of the processor and the graphics card and leave room, because current cards have brief spikes above their usual draw. Choose PC power supplies by the connectors too: newer cards need 12V-2x6, previously labelled 12VHPWR, older ones several PCIe connectors.

Efficiency is described by 80 PLUS certification in the Bronze, Gold, Platinum and Titanium grades — a higher grade means less energy turned into heat and usually quieter running. Look at the fan size as well, and whether the unit offers a fan-stop mode at low load.

Modular cables are not interchangeable between units — the same socket on the PSU side can be wired differently on another model or brand, and a cable from elsewhere will destroy the unit and the parts connected to it. Always use the cables supplied with that particular power supply.

Do not open the power supply — the capacitors inside hold a dangerous voltage even after it is unplugged. Before any work, switch the computer off, pull the plug and, on older models, check the input voltage selector. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions, which also cover wattage, connectors and dimensions.
