The fireplace alone is not enough: running it takes fuel and maintaining it takes spare parts. Fireplace accessories cover consumables, parts that wear out over time and items that change the firebox or improve safety. Most items are tied to a specific type of fireplace, so it is worth comparing dimensions and part codes against the manual.
The best-selling item is bioethanol, sold in one-litre bottles and in five- and ten-litre canisters. Concentration sits around 96 per cent or higher, and anything lower burns worse and smokes more. It is kept in a closed container, away from heat and children. A funnel or a dosing bottle with a flexible spout makes filling safe. Long lighters and fireplace matches make lighting easier and keep the hand at a safe distance.
The spare parts include the burners themselves, the ceramic wool inside them and tools for closing the slider. For water vapour fireplaces, ultrasonic transducers, which are wear parts, and water filters are bought as replacements. Remote controls and power adaptors are sold separately too. The wool in the burner is changed as soon as it loses absorbency and the fuel no longer stays in it. The part code is always model-specific, because burner dimensions differ between manufacturers.
The look of the firebox is changed by decorations such as ceramic and fireclay logs, glass crystals, pebbles or imitation embers. On fireplaces with a real flame the decoration has to be intended for the firebox and heat-resistant, ordinary glass is not used. On water vapour models it is purely about looks, because the mist stays cold.
Safety and installation are covered by protective glass and guards, non-combustible plates under the fireplace and wall brackets. A guard prevents direct contact with the flame and suits a home with children or pets. The plate protects the floor under freestanding models, and manufacturers require it on combustible surfaces.
