Inflatable car mattresses

The inflatable car mattress turns the boot or the folded seats into a place to sleep, with no tent to pitch. The size is chosen to match the car interior, and a mattress of 170 by 120 centimetres fits a normal estate. The flocked surface neither chills nor sticks, but the PVC underneath expands in heat, so it is not pumped up hard. The engine stays off for warming up as well, because carbon monoxide builds up even with a window cracked open.

Inflatable car mattresses

The inflatable car mattress turns the car into a place to sleep with no tent needed. Most often it goes on the folded rear seat or in the boot of an estate or an SUV, where it evens out the uneven surface. Besides the mattress, the pack usually holds a pump, pillows, an underlay to go beneath it and a storage bag. It earns its place on trips with a night at the roadside, at festivals and as a fallback when the plan changes.

Before buying, the car interior is measured, because the mattress size has to fit between the two rear doors. The 170 by 120 centimetre model matches a normal estate with the seats folded, and smaller cars take a shorter one. The length is measured from the tailgate to the front seats pushed as far forward as they go. Wedges or inflatable fillers take up the footwell so the mattress does not drop into the recess.

The top side has a flocked surface, that is fine fibre glued onto PVC, which neither chills nor clings to the skin. Underneath sits the PVC itself, and its thickness decides how long the mattress lasts. The seams are the weakest point, which is why the mattress does not go straight into the boot but onto the underlay supplied. The flock is cleaned with a damp cloth, because detergents and solvents dissolve the glue beneath the fibre.

The mattress is inflated with the pump running off the car socket, but the air pressure is not taken to the limit. PVC expands in heat, so a mattress inflated in the afternoon can strain the seams at night. In winter it works the other way and air usually has to be topped up in the morning. A correctly inflated mattress gives about two centimetres in the middle without going hard.

Warming up in a closed car with the engine running is forbidden, because carbon monoxide builds up even with a window cracked open. Because of the damp it pays to leave the windows ajar and cover them with a sunshade, not with plastic sheet, which shuts off the air change. On the road the mattress travels folded in its bag, because inflated it blocks the view and the belts.
