Jewellery making and beads
Bracelets, necklaces and earrings made to your own design are easy to create at home, even without any experience. Jewellery making and beads go hand in hand, with glass, wooden, acrylic and ceramic beads, tiny seed beads, spacers and pendants as the basis. They are joined by beading thread, elastic cord and wire, jewellery findings such as clasps and earring hooks, plus pliers and storage organisers. Complete kits with instructions make getting started simple, as they contain everything needed for the first pieces.
Jewellery making and beads
Making your own jewellery is a popular hobby for adults and children alike, and a practical way to create a unique accessory or gift. Jewellery making and beads offer plenty of freedom: the same bracelet can look completely different depending on the colour, shape and material of the beads. The basis is always a combination of beads, stringing material and findings that hold the piece together and make it wearable.
Glass beads have rich colours and shine and stand up well to everyday wear. Pressed and faceted styles refract light, while lampwork beads look like tiny works of art. Small seed beads suit embroidery, woven bracelets and delicate necklaces, whereas wooden, acrylic and ceramic beads are lighter and often chosen by children or fans of a natural look. When choosing, it is worth checking the hole size, which determines how thick a thread or wire will fit through.
For stringing, you can use elastic cord, nylon thread, coated beading wire, waxed cord, leather or jewellery wire. Elastic is the simplest option for bracelets without a clasp, beading wire with crimp beads keeps necklaces in shape, and jewellery wire can be bent into pendants and earrings. Jewellery findings complete each piece: clasps, jump rings, bead tips, earring hooks or extension chains. For sensitive skin, surgical steel or nickel-free components are a good choice.
Useful tools include at least round-nose pliers for forming loops, flat-nose pliers for opening jump rings and side cutters for wire. A compartment organiser keeps beads and small parts tidy. For beginners, jewellery making kits are practical, as they combine beads, stringing material, findings and instructions in one pack. Children's kits have larger beads and simpler designs, while kits for more experienced makers offer finer materials and more advanced techniques. Small beads are not suitable for very young children, however.
