A well-chosen dog kennel should be big enough for your dog to stand up, turn around and lie stretched out, but not too roomy, as a smaller space holds heat better. A raised floor protects against damp and cold from the ground, and a removable or hinged roof makes cleaning easier.
Wooden kennels insulate well and suit year-round outdoor living, especially with insulated walls and an entrance sheltered from the wind. Plastic kennels are lightweight, easy to wash and won't rot. Position the entrance away from the prevailing wind and place the kennel on a dry, slightly raised spot.
Dog runs made from galvanised welded panels with a lockable gate create a secure area in the garden. Part of the run should be roofed so your dog has shade in summer and shelter from the rain, and a solid floor of paving or concrete makes cleaning easier. A run should always contain a kennel and a bowl of fresh water.
