Beds

Good sleep starts with a sturdy, comfortable bed, which also sets the style for the whole bedroom. Beds vary in size, construction and material, so it is easy to find a model for one or two people, for a small room or a spacious bedroom. The range includes single and double beds, upholstered, wooden and metal frames, storage beds and divan beds. For comfortable sleep, a well-chosen mattress and base matter just as much.

Beds

The most important factor is bed size. Single beds are usually 80–90 cm wide, roomier options 120 or 140 cm, and double beds 160 or 180 cm. The standard length is 200 cm, while taller people will appreciate 210 or 220 cm. A bed should be at least 15–20 cm longer than the sleeper's height, and it is best to leave about 60 cm of free space around it.

Construction affects both comfort and style. Upholstered beds with a padded headboard are comfortable to lean against while reading, solid wood beds look natural and are very durable, and metal frames are lightweight and suit industrial interiors. Boxspring beds consist of a sprung base, a mattress and a topper, which makes them higher and easier to get out of.

In smaller homes, storage beds are a practical choice. A lift-up base or drawers under the bed hold duvets, pillows and seasonal clothes, freeing up wardrobe space. Beds with built-in bedside tables or headboard shelves are also useful.

Most beds are sold without a mattress and often without a slatted base, so it is worth checking what is included. A slatted base keeps the mattress ventilated and, on adjustable models, lets you raise the head or foot section. The mattress size must match the inner dimensions of the bed, otherwise the mattress will slide or will not fit the frame. When replacing an old mattress, it is also worth measuring the depth of the frame so the mattress neither sticks up too far nor sits too low.

The height of the sleeping surface affects how easy it is to get up. Lower beds of around 40 cm look modern and airy, while higher beds of 50–60 cm are appreciated by older people and anyone who wants to get up easily. The legs and frame joints should be solid so the bed does not creak when you move.
