Circulation and booster pumps

Circulation pumps for heating and hot water recirculation and booster pumps that raise the pressure in the system — including domestic booster sets. Choose by head, flow rate and port-to-port length. Do not let the pump run dry and connect it through an RCD.

Circulation and booster pumps

Pumps that keep water moving around a circuit or raise its pressure — circulators for the heating system and for hot water recirculation, booster and self-priming pumps to strengthen weak pressure, and domestic booster sets with a pressure vessel and pressure switch.

Two figures and the fitting length decide it — the head in metres, the flow rate in litres per minute and, on circulators, also the port-to-port length and the connection thread, so the pump fits the existing pipework. Choose circulation and booster pumps by these and by whether it is heating water or drinking water, where the pump must be intended for that purpose.

Newer circulators are usually electronically controlled and match their speed to demand, which cuts consumption compared with old three-speed models. On booster pumps and sets, the pressure switch governs operation according to the set cut-in and cut-out pressure.

Running dry damages the pump — without water the seal and the motor overheat, so fill and vent the system before starting it. These are electrical appliances around water: plug them into a socket protected by an RCD and disconnect them before any handling.

Before frost, drain the pump and the pipes and watch the maximum temperature and pressure of the medium. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions, which also apply to the mounting position, venting and the electrical connection.
