Thermal cameras

Thermal cameras show how temperature is spread out, so the display reveals what the eye misses — heat escaping from the house, the run of underfloor heating, or an overheating breaker. Here you will find standalone handheld models with their own display as well as thermal cameras for a phone over USB-C. Choose according to detector resolution, thermal sensitivity and the measuring range.

Thermal cameras

Any surface warmer than its surroundings gives off infrared radiation, and a thermal camera turns that into a colour image. That is how you find the spot where heat leaks out of the house, trace the run of underfloor heating, or spot a damp corner or a terminal getting hot in the consumer unit — without touching anything.

Handheld cameras have their own display and battery, work on their own and suit regular work: inspections, building sites, servicing. Thermal cameras for a phone plug in over USB-C and use the handset as both display and storage. They are smaller and cheaper; you just need to check that the connector and operating system match.

What matters most is detector resolution — figures such as 96×96, 256×192 or 640×480 pixels tell you how small a detail the camera can separate. Display resolution on its own means nothing. Also watch thermal sensitivity (NETD in mK), the measuring range, the refresh rate, and whether the device can blend the thermal image with the normal one, which makes it easier to get your bearings in the shot.

Bear in mind that a thermal camera measures surface temperature, not the inside of the material. Emissivity affects the result: shiny and metallic surfaces reflect their surroundings and give misleading readings, so matt tape or a matt coating is applied to them and the correct emissivity is set on the device. It is not a medical device and is not intended for measuring body temperature. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and observe safety rules when working on electrical installations.
