Negative and slide scanners

Negative and slide scanners help you turn old negatives and slides from the family archive into digital photos and keep them on your computer or phone. You’ll find standalone scanners with a screen, scanners that connect to a computer, and adapters and backlit kits for digitising with a camera or phone.

Negative and slide scanners

The easiest option is a negative scanner with its own screen that needs no computer or drivers. You preview each image on the 2.36 or 5 inch screen before saving it to the internal memory or an SD card. Depending on the model, they handle 135 film, 126 and 110 formats, Super 8 frames, black-and-white negatives and mounted slides at 5 to 24 MP (interpolated on some models).

If you prefer working on a big screen, choose a scanner with a USB connection to your computer. Its 8 MP sensor with 2400 dpi is powered over USB, so it needs no mains adapter or batteries.

For digitising with your own camera and a macro lens, there are negative digitising adapters and kits. They attach to the lens with a 52 mm thread or combine a sliding rail with a backlit panel, so they also handle 120 roll film. The CRI 95+ LED backlight reproduces colours faithfully, according to the manufacturer. For your phone, there’s a foldable AA-battery scanner and a stand with a phone holder and wireless shutter release.
