E-book readers

A screen that reads like paper and doesn't shine into your eyes — that's the main advantage of the device for book lovers. E-book readers show the text on an e-ink display, so your eyes don't tire even after hours of reading and the battery lasts for weeks. A whole library fits into a single light device. The models differ in screen size, front lighting, water resistance and supported formats. You can choose based on where you read most often and which book ecosystem you want to use.

E-book readers

A device meant only for reading offers something neither a phone nor a tablet can — a screen made of electronic ink that looks like a printed page and doesn't shine into your eyes. Thanks to this, e-book readers handle long reading without fatigue and comfortably last several weeks on a single charge. They're valued by avid readers, students and travellers who want hundreds of books in a single light device.

The models differ mainly in screen size and front lighting. Smaller diagonals around six inches are easy to hold in one hand, larger formats suit PDF and comics. Adjustable front lighting makes reading possible even in the dark, and on better models you can also change the light temperature towards warmer tones, which disturb sleep less in the evening. Control is handled by a touch layer or physical buttons for turning pages.

The supported formats and features are crucial. Besides the usual EPUB, readers often also handle PDF, MOBI or text files, so you can load books from various sources. Many models are water-resistant, which you'll appreciate at the pool and in the bath, and offer enough storage for an extensive library. They also differ in which e-book store they're tied to.

When choosing, start from where and what you read most often. For ordinary novels a basic model with a six-inch screen is enough, for technical texts and PDF go for a larger diagonal. If you read by the water, choose a waterproof variant, and if you want to read in the evening, look for an adjustable front light temperature. A well-chosen reader turns reading into a comfortable ritual and fits your library into your bag.
