Skis and snowboards wear over the course of a season. The base dries out and picks up dirt, the edges are dulled by ice and rocks, and small scratches reduce glide. Regular ski and snowboard maintenance at home keeps equipment in good condition between visits to a professional workshop and helps avoid more expensive repairs. How often to service your equipment depends on the number of days on the snow: for recreational skiers, waxing after a few days of riding and checking the edges regularly is usually enough.
The foundation is base waxing. Waxes differ in the temperature range they are designed for and in their form: solid waxes are applied with an iron, while liquid and paste waxes are a quick option on the go. In recent years, fluorinated waxes have been replaced by fluorine-free waxes, which are kinder to the environment. A waxing iron should have precisely adjustable temperature, as overheating can damage the base. Once cool, excess wax is removed with a plastic scraper and the base is brushed to open up its structure.
The second key area is edge sharpening. Sharp edges provide secure grip on hard and icy snow. This calls for files, diamond stones and edge guides that hold the set angle – typically 87 to 89 degrees for the side edge. Minor base damage can be repaired with polyethylene repair sticks, which are melted into the scratch and scraped flush once they have hardened.
For comfortable work, sturdy ski or snowboard vices are useful, along with rubber bands that hold the binding brakes out of the way during tuning. For beginners, a complete kit with wax, scraper, brush and file makes the choice easier. Before summer storage, it is a good idea to apply a thicker layer of wax to the base to protect it from drying out and to treat the edges against rust.
