Rhythm is the foundation of every song, and drumming is one of the most natural ways to enjoy music. Playing the drums also develops coordination and helps you unwind.
Acoustic drum kits include a bass drum, snare, toms and cymbals and are ideal for the rehearsal room or playing in a band. Electronic drums have rubber or mesh pads and can be played quietly with headphones, which is especially welcome in a flat. They often offer a metronome, practice rhythms and a connection to a computer.
Percussion instruments such as the cajon, djembe or bongos are played by hand and are easy to carry, so they suit campfires and acoustic gigs. Tambourines, shakers, triangles and castanets fill out the rhythm in a band, at school and in musical games with children.
When choosing, think about space, volume and the player's level. Drumsticks, a practice pad, a drum stool and a metronome make getting started easier for beginners.
