Tree and shrub seeds

Growing trees and shrubs from seed is a project spanning years that rewards the patient — out of it comes a bonsai, a sapling for the garden or a whole hedge. The range includes tree and shrub seeds: conifers like pine, spruce and larch, broadleaf trees like maple, oak and birch, ornamental and flowering shrubs, and exotic and heat-loving species for the keener grower.

Many woody plants have dormant seeds that won't germinate without preparation. Stratification — keeping the seeds moist and cool for several weeks — mimics winter and wakes the embryo; hard seeds are nicked (scarified) or soaked before sowing. For each species we list the pre-treatment it needs.

When choosing, consider the intended use and climate — bonsai suits species with small leaves and good branching, a hedge calls for fast-growing shrubs, and a container for dwarf forms. Check the species' hardiness for your zone and the expected size of the mature plant.

After sowing, expect a longer, uneven germination — some species come up only after weeks or months. Keep the sowing moist and undisturbed, and protect young seedlings from direct sun and frost. Store the seed packets somewhere dry and cool so they keep their germination rate.
