A set of one hundred seeds of the Italian columnar cypress is a popular choice for growers looking to add a touch of Southern Europe to their garden. Cupressus sempervirens var. stricta is a classic Mediterranean tree known to all visitors of Italy and Provence – slender dark green columns adorn the parks of villas, cemeteries, and avenues. This evergreen tree is one of the most typical symbols of Southern Europe and is valued in horticulture for its narrow upright habit and very small footprint. One hundred quality seeds allow you to grow enough seedlings to establish a Mediterranean avenue or group planting in a family garden.
The Italian cypress forms an exceptionally narrow columnar tree reaching heights of 15 to 25 metres with a crown width of just 1 to 2 metres. Branches grow upright along the trunk, creating a characteristic chimney-like appearance without the need for pruning. The foliage consists of small dark green scales tightly pressed against the twigs, which remain on the plant throughout the year. Cones are spherical with a diameter of 2 to 3 centimetres, green when young and brown when mature. The tree has exceptional longevity – specimens over 1000 years old have been documented abroad.
For sowing one hundred seeds, cold stratification in moist substrate in the refrigerator for 4 to 6 weeks is recommended. After stratification, the seeds should be sown shallowly in well-draining peat substrate and maintained at a temperature of 18 to 22 degrees Celsius. Germination occurs in 3 to 6 weeks and germination rates reach 40 to 60 percent with quality fresh seeds. Seedlings grow slowly in the first years, later growth rates reach 30 to 50 centimetres per year. For successful cultivation from one hundred seeds, it is realistic to expect 30 to 55 healthy seedlings suitable for further cultivation.

The Italian cypress will give the garden a formal Mediterranean appearance and is suitable for creating festive avenues along driveways, terraces or pools. For cultivation in a Czech garden, it is important to choose a sunny location sheltered from strong northern winds, ideally near the south wall of the house. The tree tolerates drier periods and occasional summer heat, but requires well-drained soil without standing water. The Italian cypress is also suitable for topiary and maintenance in the form of formal garden architecture. In combination with lavender, sage, and rosemary, it will create a perfect composition of a southern garden.
