Broadleaf tree and shrub seeds

A broadleaf tree grown from seed rewards patient gardeners and bonsai enthusiasts — over a few years it becomes a sapling with a character of its own. The range includes broadleaf tree and shrub seeds: oaks, maples, beeches, birches and hornbeams, ornamental and flowering shrubs like lilac and hawthorn, and bee-friendly and fruiting species.

Most broadleaf trees have dormant seeds that won't germinate without preparation. Stratification — keeping the seeds moist and cool for several weeks — mimics winter and wakes the embryo. Hard stones and nutlets are nicked (scarified) or soaked before sowing. For each species we list the pre-treatment it needs.

When choosing, consider the intended use and climate — bonsai suits species with small leaves and good branching, the garden ornamental and flowering forms, and a hedge fast-growing shrubs like hornbeam or privet. Check the species' hardiness for your zone and the expected size of the mature tree.

After sowing, expect a longer, uneven germination — broadleaf trees come up over weeks to months. Keep the sowing moist and undisturbed, and protect young seedlings from direct sun and drying out. Store the seed packets somewhere dry and cool so they keep their germination rate.
