Overview
Hawthorn Seed Crataegus monogyna 10 pcs original Czech tree with white flowering for seed cultivation and establishment of a hedge

A pack of 10 seeds of Crataegus monogyna represents a practical choice for hobby gardeners who plan to grow several seedlings at once – whether for their own garden, as a gift, or for teaching children about the plant life cycle. Crataegus monogyna is one of the most widespread species of hawthorn in the European landscape and is an integral part of hedgerows, field edges, and old stone walls of rural areas. Its cultivation from seeds continues a centuries-old gardening tradition and provides a valuable plant with many utilitarian benefits.

A characteristic feature of the species is its small white flowers with distinctly coloured anthers ranging from pink to purple, which create a gentle contrast in the crown. The leaves are dark green, deeply palmately lobed into three to seven lobes with irregularly serrated edges, and turn yellow-orange in autumn. The wood of the hawthorn is exceptionally hard and dense, previously used for making hammers, wedges, tool handles, and wooden implements. The bark of young branches is smooth and grey-brown, while on older trunks it peels off in small flakes.

For successful germination, it is advisable to first mechanically scarify the seeds by lightly sanding or soaking them in hot water for several hours, which breaks the hard protective layer of the seed. After this treatment, the seeds are stored in moist substrate at a temperature of around zero to five degrees Celsius for approximately four months. Alternatively, natural stratification can be utilised directly in the garden by sowing the seeds in autumn in a prepared strip of soil and covering them with a thin layer of mulch. Germination appears in the spring of the following year or the year after, and the seedlings are allowed to grow in their original bed for two to three years before transplanting.

Contents of the package:

  • 10 pcs of Crataegus monogyna seeds

From ten grown seedlings, a smaller section of hedge can be established, approximately five to seven metres long, which will create a dense and practically impenetrable green barrier within a few years. The fruits of single-seeded hawthorn contain a number of valuable substances including flavonoids, procyanidins, and triterpenic acids, making them the basis for many preparations supporting the cardiovascular system. With good care, the first flowers will bloom and small fruits will appear as early as six to eight years after sowing the seed. For successful rearing, it is advisable to protect the seedlings from wild game, which will not overlook hawthorn shoots. The tree is also valued for its sturdy thorny structure, which serves as a safe nesting site for small birds.
