Overview
Large Pack of Hawthorn Seeds Crataegus pinnatifida 50 pcs Asian Tree with Red Fruits for Nurseries and Permaculture Gardens

The bulk pack of fifty seeds of Chinese hawthorn Crataegus pinnatifida is designed for professional garden nurseries, educational institutions with a cultivation programme, and owners of larger plots planning to establish fruit forest gardens. Crataegus pinnatifida is regarded in its native land as one of the ten most important traditional fruit crops and has been intensively studied in recent decades within European functional food research. Mass sowing allows for the selection of the most vigorous individuals and the preservation of sufficient genetic variability for future propagation.

The fruits of Chinese hawthorn are a rich source of flavonoids such as vitexin and rutin, as well as chlorogenic acid, ursolic acid, and a complex of oligomeric procyanidins, making them one of the most significant functional foods in East Asia. Currently, over ten registered cultivars with varying sizes and sweetness of fruits are grown in China – among the most well-known are the varieties Da Jin Xing, Da Mian Qiu, and Min Hong. Under favourable conditions, the tree can reach a crown width of up to five metres, and in the vicinity of the flowering plant, a significantly increased activity of insect pollinators can be observed in May.

For mass propagation of fifty seeds, summer harvesting of seeds from the fruits, careful cleaning from the pulp, and placing them in a natural stratification period outdoors in a shaded bed is recommended. Professional nursery practice employs controlled stratification in temperature boxes, initially at around 22 °C, followed by 4 °C. Treatment with gibberellic acid (GA3) can increase germination rates by 15 to 25 percent and shorten the stratification period by several weeks. From fifty seeds, it is possible to obtain 15 to 30 strong seedlings suitable for sale in the nursery or for further cultivation.

Contents of the package:

  • 50 pcs of Crataegus pinnatifida seeds

Fifty seeds correspond to the usual quantity for pilot planting by professional nurseries, scientific experiments focused on the introduction of Asian woody plants, or the establishment of fruit forest gardens. The fruits of Chinese hawthorn are becoming a popular ingredient in superfoods abroad, and their processing into powder, juice, and dried forms is gradually gaining popularity in Europe. In combination with other trees from the Rosaceae family, hawthorn pinnatifida acts as a natural pillar of the lower tree layer and hosts its own spectrum of pollinating insects. The large-fruited hawthorn also offers opportunities for selection work for those interested in home breeding of fruit species. From a cultivation perspective, it is advisable to establish a fenced nursery and regularly water the seedlings and monitor their health in the initial years.
