Eucalyptus and Australian woody plant seeds
Fragrant eucalyptus on the windowsill or a flowering callistemon in a pot — Australian woody plants bring a piece of the southern hemisphere home. Here you will find eucalyptus and Australian plant seeds: eucalypts, acacias, grevilleas, callistemon and banksias. These are mostly frost-tender container plants; for each we list the germination needs and seed pre-treatment.
Eucalyptus and Australian woody plant seeds
Plants from Australia tempt with unusual leaves, bottlebrush flowers and aroma — and many can be grown from seed at home too. The range includes eucalyptus and Australian woody plant seeds: various eucalypt species, acacias (wattles), grevilleas, callistemon, banksias and other species for collectors of exotics.
Germination varies from plant to plant. Eucalypts and callistemon have fine seeds sown on the surface that germinate in light at around 20–25 °C. Many Australian woody plants are fire-adapted — their hard seeds come up better after soaking in hot water or a smoke treatment that mimics a natural fire. For each species we list the recommended method.
In central European climates these are mostly frost-tender plants — grown in a container, outdoors in summer and in a bright, cooler room or conservatory in winter. Sun-loving species want a free-draining, rather lean substrate and careful watering, as they don't tolerate permanently wet roots.
After sowing, expect uneven germination — some species come up in a few weeks, others only after months. Protect young seedlings from direct midday sun and overwatering. Store the seed packets somewhere dry and cool so they keep their germination rate.
