Tropical woody plant seeds

You can grow a tree from the tropics at home from a single seed — the bizarre baobab becomes a thick green "bottle tree", the jacaranda a finely feathered houseplant. The range includes tropical and exotic woody plant seeds: baobabs, delonix (flame tree), jacarandas, tamarind, mimosas and other trees and shrubs of warm regions for collectors.

Tropical woody plants often have particular germination needs. Many seeds need steady warmth around 25–30 °C and higher humidity to germinate, so they do well in an indoor mini-greenhouse. Hard seeds, as in baobab or tamarind, are nicked (scarified) or soaked in warm water before sowing. For each species we list the recommended method.

Exotics grown at home are frost-tender houseplants — in summer they appreciate a warm spot outdoors, in winter a bright, cooler room. Most grow fast and please with their unusual looks; flowering and fruit rarely happen in indoor cultivation.

For germination, give the seeds warmth, moisture and patience — tropical woody plants come up over weeks to months. Protect young seedlings from direct midday sun and overwatering. Sow fresh seeds sooner rather than later, as their germination rate falls over time.
