Overview
Cryptomeria japonica Seeds 200 pcs Fast-Growing Conifer with Green Foliage for Planting Woodland Parks

A large pack of two hundred seeds of Cryptomeria japonica aimed at growers planning systematic seedling production or experimental plantings in Central European temperate zone conditions. Cryptomeria japonica is the most cultivated conifer species in Japanese forestry, with plantation production reaching 4.5 million hectares. In the European arboreta environment, it is increasingly appearing among collectors of unconventional conifers and lovers of Japanese zen aesthetics. The bulk packaging allows for establishing a smaller seed nursery with potential for sale or use within commercial horticulture. The photograph shows a typical young specimen with bright green foliage in a pavilion form.

In Japanese tradition, there are over 200 different cultivars of Cryptomeria, varying in size, crown shape, foliage colour, and needle form. The tallest recorded specimens in sacred groves exceed 55 metres in height and are over 3000 years old, as evidenced by the famous Jōmon-sugi tree on Yakushima Island. The wood of Cryptomeria is lightweight, pinkish-brown, fragrant, and easy to work with, making it indispensable in traditional Japanese construction. The plant exhibits two types of foliage – young specimens have long, fine needles, while older ones switch to short, awl-like needles. The bark is reddish-brown and peels off in fibrous strips in older individuals.

For sowing two hundred seeds, it is advisable to prepare a larger planting container with a well-draining peat-soil mix with low pH. Pre-sowing treatment includes soaking in lukewarm water for 24 hours, followed by cold stratification for 8 weeks in a moist environment in the refrigerator. After stratification, the seeds are sown shallowly, and the substrate is kept evenly moist at temperatures of 18 to 23 degrees Celsius. Germination occurs gradually over 4 to 10 weeks, with two hundred seeds typically yielding 40 to 80 viable seedlings.

Contents of the package:

  • 200 pcs of Cryptomeria japonica seeds

From the two hundred cultivated seedlings of Cryptomeria, one can establish a smaller ornamental grove or forestry trial within a larger garden, park, or experimental arboretum. When grown in container culture, the plants grow slowly, approximately 10 to 30 centimetres per year, and are also suitable for creating unconventional Japanese bonsais in shohin or chuhin style. Cryptomeria is valued in the garden for its long-lasting bright green foliage with a feathery structure reminiscent of oversized ferns. For growers in the Czech Republic, it is advantageous that the species tolerates calcareous soils better than most conifers from the Asian belt.
