Mid-drive conversion kits

Mid-drive kits rated at 250 to 750 W fit into the frame’s bottom bracket shell and drive the bike through the chain, so the motor also uses your gears. Some kits also include a battery and charger. Kits rated above 250 W are not road-legal under EU rules.

The motor replaces the bottom bracket and fits into a bottom bracket shell 68–73 mm or 100 mm wide, as found on many fatbikes, so measure the shell before you buy. The motors are rated at 250, 500 or 750 W at 48 V. Power goes through a 36, 42 or 44-tooth chainring and the chain to the rear wheel.

Displays come in several versions: mini, colour, touchscreen or a Bluetooth display. All kits have brake sensors or brake levers that cut the motor when braking, and some also have a throttle. Some kits have a torque sensor and a controller built directly into the motor.

Kits with a battery include a 48 or 52 V battery of 624 to 1440 Wh, mostly for the down tube, in some cases for the rear rack, plus a charger. For the rest you need a suitable battery. In the EU, only an e-bike up to 250 W with pedal-only assistance up to 25 km/h counts as a bicycle; stronger kits and kits with a throttle may fall into another vehicle category.
