Vegetable seeds

Your own tomatoes, cucumbers or radishes taste different from shop-bought — and start with a packet of seeds. Here you will find vegetable seeds for the greenhouse, the bed and growing in a balcony box: fruiting vegetables like tomatoes and peppers, root vegetables like carrots and radishes, and leafy ones like lettuce and spinach. For each packet we list the sowing time and germination rate.

Vegetable seeds

Growing vegetables from seed pays off in flavour and for your wallet — one packet gives a whole row, and you can choose varieties you won't find in the shop. The range includes vegetable seeds for the greenhouse, the bed and the balcony box: fruiting vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers, root vegetables like carrots, radishes and beetroot, and leafy ones like lettuce, spinach and rocket.

Different kinds are sown in different ways. Heat-loving kinds such as tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers are started on the windowsill and planted out after the spring frosts, while hardier root and leafy vegetables are sown straight into the bed. Watch the sowing depth and spacing — barely cover fine seeds, press larger ones in deeper.

When choosing, tell apart early and late varieties and the growing method. Tall cordon tomatoes suit the greenhouse, bush varieties the bed, and compact and trailing types the balcony box. With lettuce and radishes you'll appreciate the speed — the first harvest comes in just a few weeks.

For germination, give the seeds moisture and warmth, and don't let the sowings dry out. Store the packets somewhere dry and cool so they keep their germination rate for the next season. By sowing in stages, in smaller batches, you'll have fresh vegetables right through the summer.
