Overview
Seeds of Large Ivy Gourd Coccinia grandis 10 pcs Tropical Climbing Plant with Red Fruits for Indian and Thai Cuisine

Coccinia grandis, large ivy gourd, is a tropical perennial climbing plant from the gourd family, native to India, Southeast Asia, and tropical regions of Africa. This package contains 10 seeds for experimental cultivation of this popular Asian utility plant in a greenhouse, heated conservatory, or on a summer terrace. Large ivy gourd produces long, tendril-bearing stems that can grow up to 5 metres, quickly climbing on supports, trellises, or pergolas. A characteristic feature of the plant is its palmate lobed dark green leaves.

The fruits are small, elongated oval measuring 3 to 7 cm, initially green with pale marbling on the surface. Upon ripening, they develop a characteristic vivid red colour, as seen in the image of the plant during the ripening process. In culinary use, young green unripe fruits are preferred, as their taste and texture resemble mini cucumbers – they are added to Indian curries, Thai stir-fries, soups, or simply cooked as a vegetable with garlic.

For successful germination, it is advisable to soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours. They should be sown shallowly in well-draining substrate at a temperature of 26 to 30 °C. Germination usually takes 2 to 4 weeks and can be irregular. The plant is heat-loving and thrives best in European conditions in a heated greenhouse or conservatory, where it reaches maturity within one season and begins to bear fruit in the first year. The plants are dioecious, so both male and female individuals are necessary for fruiting.

Growing ivy gourd at home presents an interesting challenge for enthusiasts of Asian cuisine and for growers of exotic vegetables. Young green fruits can be used to prepare authentic Indian dishes such as tindora masala or Thai curry mixes. The fruits have a mild flavour with a slight sweetness and readily absorb spices, making them suitable for experimenting with your own recipes. For successful fruiting, it is important to provide the plant with ample space to climb, a sunny warm location, and regular watering during the growing season. During cooler periods, it is advisable to protect the plant and reduce watering. Very ripe red fruits are also edible, having a sweeter taste, but are used less frequently in the kitchen than the green unripe ones.
