Overview
Cionosicyos macranthus Seeds 5 pcs Rare Tropical Climbing Vine with Yellow Fruits for Cultivation in a Greenhouse or Conservatory

Cionosicyos macranthus is a rarely cultivated tropical climbing plant from the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae), originating from the rainforests of Central America and the Caribbean. This package contains 5 seeds for trial cultivation of this unusual vine, which will amaze botanists and collectors of exotic plants with its attractive fruit. In adulthood, the plant produces long, tendril-bearing stems reaching lengths of 5 to 10 metres, allowing it to climb around taller trees and supports. Characteristic of the species are large, spherical yellow fruits with richly orange to red flesh, in which small dark seeds are flatly spread.

The leaves have a typical gourd-like appearance – they are large, palmately lobed or trifoliate, with a rough surface typical of many representatives of the family. The flowers are solitary on long stalks, with male and female on the same plant, featuring cream-white to yellowish petals. After pollination, the fruits gradually develop to the size of a mature apple, which, upon ripening, acquire a characteristic yellow colour speckled with fine spots. The fruit is consumed in its country of origin for its juicy flesh, similar to related species from the same family.

For successful germination, it is advisable to soak the seeds in warm water for 12 to 24 hours before sowing them into a well-drained humus-rich substrate. They germinate at a temperature of 26 to 32 °C within 2 to 4 weeks under constant moisture of the substrate. Young seedlings grow quickly and require consistent warmth above 18 °C, high humidity, and support for climbing. In our climatic conditions, the plant can be successfully cultivated exclusively in a greenhouse or conservatory with year-round higher temperatures.

Growing this rare tropical gourd is a popular choice among collectors of exotic plants and botanists seeking lesser-known species for their gardens. A home-grown specimen enhances the atmosphere of an exotic greenhouse garden and can become an interesting element in a botanically oriented collection. For successful growth, it is important to provide enough space for the climbing stems, a quality support such as a trellis or garden wire, and regular watering during the growing season. The plant thrives in sunny locations with filtered light, and it prefers a humus-rich, well-drained substrate enriched with mature compost. Regular fertilisation during the summer season will support both the growth of the stems and the quality of the fruits, if the plant can be brought to full maturity.
