Overview
Cucurbita maxima Hubbard Blue Giant Seeds 5 pcs Blue-grey Giant Winter Pumpkin for Garden Cultivation and Autumn Harvest

A set of five seeds of the giant blue Hubbard pumpkin is a suitable choice for gardeners who want to diversify their autumn harvest with a unique blue-grey variety from American tradition. Cucurbita maxima 'Hubbard Blue Giant' is a historic variety originating from the 19th century in the northeastern USA, where it was a popular part of winter supplies on farms for decades. The photograph shows the typical large spherical fruit with blue-grey skin growing among sprawling green leaves. Five seeds allow you to grow several strong plants for a whole season of fruit.

The blue Hubbard pumpkin forms a robust creeping plant reaching lengths of 3 to 5 metres, which requires plenty of space in the garden. Fruits weigh between 5 and 15 kilograms, exceptionally up to 25 kilograms under good conditions. The skin is thick, coarse, and hard with a typical blue-grey to green-blue colour, allowing the fruits to be stored for up to 6 months in a cool pantry. The flesh is deep orange, sweet, and dense with a high dry matter content, making it suitable for baking, soups, and creamy desserts. The fruits contain a large amount of beta-carotene and vitamin A.

For sowing five seeds of the Hubbard Blue Giant pumpkin, it is recommended to start indoors from mid-April in 0.5-litre pots. The seeds should be sown at a depth of 2 to 3 centimetres into well-draining substrate and maintained at a temperature of 22 to 26 degrees Celsius. Germination occurs in 5 to 10 days, with a germination rate of 80 to 90 percent for quality seeds. After mid-May, the seedlings should be planted in a sunny location with a spacing of 150 to 200 centimetres. The plants require richly fertilised soil, regular watering, and mulching for successful fruit development.

  • 5 pcs of Cucurbita maxima 'Hubbard Blue Giant' seeds

The blue Hubbard pumpkin is a classic in American cuisine for making sweet pumpkin pies, soups, and creamy sauces. The fruits are harvested just before the first frosts, when the stem begins to harden and the skin is fully firm. After harvesting, they should be allowed to ripen for 2 to 3 weeks in a dry, ventilated room, which extends their storage life. For cultivation in a British garden, it is important to have a sunny location, sufficient moisture, and composted soil. From five grown plants, you can expect a yield of 50 to 150 kilograms of fruit in one season.
