Overview
Cionosicyos macranthus Seeds 50 pcs Exotic Vine from the Gourd Family with Large Fruits for Research and Collecting Cultivation

Cionosicyos macranthus is a little-known representative of the gourd family from the tropical Americas, which is almost absent in Europe. In this expanded pack of 50 seeds, you will obtain a supply suitable for trial cultivation, research purposes, or for planting multiple specimens within a larger greenhouse collection. The species occurs naturally from Mexico through Central America to northern South America, where it grows as a climbing vine at the edges of rainforests. The plant belongs to the climbing species, which use their long tendrils to cling to surrounding vegetation.

Young plants grow relatively quickly, with stems stretching towards the light and creating a typical gourd-like habit with deeply lobed leaves. Upon maturity, the long tendril-like runners can reach several metres. The fruits develop during the warm rainy season – they are spherical to oval, growing to a size of 8 to 15 cm and, upon ripening, have a characteristic yellow skin with small spots. When the fruit is cut open, a bright orange to garnet flesh is revealed, containing numerous flat seeds. The species is known in some Central American communities as "pepino de monte" – mountain gourd.

To germinate the seeds, it is necessary to simulate tropical conditions. Before sowing, the seeds should be soaked in lukewarm water for 24 hours and then sown into slightly moist coconut fibre or a light seedling substrate. Germination occurs at a temperature of around 28 °C and it is advisable to use a mini greenhouse or covered container to maintain humidity. The first seedlings usually appear within 14 to 25 days. Seedlings need to be protected from direct harsh sunlight in the early stages of growth and gradually acclimatised to brighter locations.

  • 50 pcs of Cionosicyos macranthus seeds

The larger pack allows growers to experiment with various germination methods and select the most vigorous individuals for further cultivation. The species requires specific tropical conditions, so cultivation is not suitable for outdoor planting in our climatic zones. A home-grown specimen will enhance the atmosphere of an exotic greenhouse, heated atrium, or larger conservatory, and will become a conversation piece among collectors of unusual cultivated plants. For successful growth, a stable warm environment, ample space for the stems to climb, and regular watering with settled or rainwater are essential. In combination with occasional fertilisation using specialised fertiliser for tropical plants, healthy growth can be achieved, and under ideal conditions, flowering may occur.
