A set of ten seeds of Korean melon chamoe (Cucumis melo Agrestis) is a popular offering for enthusiasts of Asian cuisine who wish to try growing this traditional Korean summer delicacy in the conditions of a British garden. The photograph shows the typical fruit of oval shape with bright yellow skin marked with white longitudinal stripes, which grows to a length of 10 to 15 centimetres and a weight of 250 to 400 grams. In Korea, chamoe is one of the most consumed seasonal foods during the summer months and is traditionally served fresh and sliced as a snack. The fruits have crisp, juicy white flesh with a mildly honey-sweet taste and a characteristic delicate aroma.
The Korean melon forms a creeping vine with tendrils and large palmate lobed leaves, growing to a length of 1 to 3 metres. Yellow flowers bloom gradually during the summer and are monoecious, so a single plant is sufficient for fruiting. Fruits ripen gradually from the 70th to the 90th day after sowing, when they acquire their characteristic deep yellow colour and begin to easily drop from the stem. The seeds inside the fruit are small, white, and in Korean tradition, they are consumed along with the flesh. For the best flavour, the fruits should be harvested at full ripeness and consumed immediately, as chamoe lasts only 7 to 10 days in the fridge.
For sowing ten seeds, indoor pre-cultivation from mid-April to early May in seed trays with peat-based substrate is recommended. The seeds are sown at a depth of 1 to 2 centimetres in a warm environment with a temperature of 24 to 28 degrees Celsius. Germination occurs quickly, usually within 5 to 8 days, and germination rates reach 80 to 95 percent with quality fresh seeds. Seedlings are transplanted into open soil or a greenhouse after mid-May at a spacing of 80 to 100 centimetres between plants. For successful fruit ripening in the UK, we recommend growing under foil or in a greenhouse.

Growing chamoe in the UK is among the growing trends among enthusiasts of Asian gastronomy who want to experience the original taste of this summer vegetable in their home kitchen. In Korea, fruits are also used to prepare chamoe juice, Korean ice desserts (bingsu), and fermented pickled chamoe known as chamoe-jangajji. For successful cultivation in the UK, it is important to protect plants from cold night temperatures below 12 degrees Celsius and ensure adequate water supply during fruit formation. From ten cultivated seedlings, 30 to 100 fruits can be expected during the season depending on conditions and care.
