Palm seeds

Growing your own palm from seed is more common than it seems — all it takes is warmth, moisture and patience. Here you will find seeds of palms suited to the home and the conservatory, from the date palm and dwarf fan palm to the washingtonia and areca. The species differ in germination speed and heat requirements, so the seeds usually come with a recommended soaking and sowing method.

Palm seeds

Palms are among the most popular indoor and garden plants, and many species are easy to raise from seed at home. Palm seeds offer a cheaper route to a larger collection than ready-grown plants, and with a little care they produce plants for the home, the patio and the conservatory.

The species differ in their needs and appearance. Indoor palms such as areca, kentia or the dwarf fan palm suit interiors and tolerate weaker light too. Hardier species, for example washingtonia or the windmill palm (Trachycarpus), cope with a summer outdoors and some even with light frost. The date palm gives seeds that many know from the ordinary fruit and is among the easiest to obtain.

Palm germination is slower than with ordinary plants and takes weeks to months in some species. The seeds benefit from soaking in lukewarm water for one to two days, sowing in a light, free-draining substrate and steady warmth around 25 to 30 °C. Moisture and a light cover speed up emergence.

When choosing, think about where you will place the palm — in a bright home, on a summer patio or in an unheated conservatory. Pick the species accordingly, by its heat and light needs. After germination, give the young plants plenty of light and careful watering so the roots do not sit permanently wet.
