Overview
Cryosophila guagara Seeds 4 pcs Rare Fan Palm from Central America for Botanical Collections and Tropical Greenhouse Plantings

A set of four carefully selected Cryosophila guagara seeds represents a remarkably rare offering for collectors of tropical palms, botanical gardens, and enthusiasts of endangered species from the Arecaceae family. This small fan palm tree from the forests of Costa Rica and Panama is classified as endangered in the wild due to deforestation of Central American rainforests. Among growers, this species is sought after for both its ecological value and its unique appearance of silvery undersides of the leaves. The opportunity to include this palm in one's collection signifies not only beauty but also a contribution to the preservation of an endangered species.

Cryosophila guagara is a small fan palm that reaches a height of 5 to 10 metres at maturity, with a relatively slender trunk measuring 8 to 15 centimetres in diameter, as shown in the photograph. The leaves have a typical fan-shaped palmate form with a diameter of 80 to 120 centimetres, with the upper side being dark green and the underside silvery to whitish, giving the crown a characteristic shimmer when moved by the wind. The trunk is covered with sharp spines and remnants of leaf sheaths at the base, which is a typical protective feature of the Cryosophila genus. In tropical environments, it blooms with small yellow-green flowers and produces small white to cream fruits measuring 1 to 2 centimetres in diameter.

Sowing the four seeds of this tropical palm requires very specific conditions – first, the seeds should be soaked in lukewarm water for 48 hours, and after swelling, they should be sown in a well-draining substrate composed of peat, coconut fibre, and perlite in a ratio of 1:1:1. The substrate must be kept constantly moist at a temperature of 28 to 32 degrees Celsius in a closed environment with high humidity (greenhouse, terrarium, mini-propagator with a lid). Germination of this species is very slow and irregular, typically taking 3 to 9 months, and the germination rate is low, often around 30 to 50 percent. For success, patience and maintaining stable conditions throughout the germination process is crucial.

Main features:

  • Spines on the trunk: sharp, protective
  • Leaves: fan-shaped, palmate, 80–120 cm
  • Underside of leaf: silvery to whitish
  • Flowers: small, yellow-green in spikes
  • Fruits: white to cream, 1–2 cm
  • Germination: 3–9 months at 28–32 °C
  • Germination rate: 30–50 %, irregular
  • Habitat: understorey of tropical rainforest
  • Frost resistance: none, minimum 15 °C
  • Growing: greenhouse, conservatory, tropicalarium

Growing this rare Central American palm from seeds is a long-term investment, as the plant reaches maturity in approximately 15 to 20 years. In its tropical areas of origin, the leaves are traditionally used for thatching roofs and the trunks are processed into posts and building materials. After germination, young plants require consistently moist substrate, partial shade, and high humidity above 70 percent. In terms of cultivation difficulty, Cryosophila guagara is more suited for experienced growers of exotic plants with technical greenhouse equipment. From a packet of four seeds, one can realistically expect one to two successfully germinated seedlings.
