Chamaerops humilis var. cerifera, dwarf fan palm with waxy blue leaves, is a remarkable variety of one of the few European palms that originates from the cooler mountainous regions of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. The leaves are covered with a whitish silvery waxy coating that protects the plant from high mountain sunlight while giving it an unmistakable silvery blue colour. This pack contains 5 seeds for growing this rare palm suitable for sunny spots in the garden, on the terrace, or for exotic border planting. In maturity, the palm reaches a height of 2 to 4 metres and grows very slowly.
Germination of the seeds requires warmth and patience. Before sowing, it is recommended to soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 to 48 hours and then lightly scarify or weaken the coating for better water access. They should be sown shallowly in well-draining substrate with a higher proportion of sand or perlite and germinate at a temperature of 22 to 28 °C. The first shoots usually appear within 2 to 4 months, sometimes even longer. After germination, the seedlings require a bright location without direct sunlight, well-draining substrate, and careful watering.
Dwarf fan palm in this variety is one of the hardiest palms for Central European climates. It can temporarily withstand temperatures around -10 to -15 °C, especially if the plant is mature and has drier substrate around the roots. In local conditions, it is advisable to plant older specimens in open ground in sunny locations with protection from northern winds. For promising long-term cultivation in our zone, it is advisable to mulch younger plants in winter and protect them with straw or non-woven fabric.

Growing this blue variant of the dwarf fan palm from your own seeds is a rewarding challenge for collectors of unusual plants as well as palm enthusiasts. Young specimens are grown in deep containers with a drainage layer at the bottom, where the plant develops a long root system. Gradually, it is possible to transition to open planting in a sheltered spot in the garden, where the plant can fully develop its fan-shaped crown. This palm is valued for its low maintenance, high drought tolerance, and unique leaf colour that remains attractive all year round. For successful long-term cultivation, a sunny location, well-draining substrate, and careful winter protection during the first years are sufficient.
