E-bike conversion kits

You’ll find kits that turn a regular bike into an e-bike, with a mid-drive motor or a rear or front hub motor, rated at 250 to 750 W and 36 to 52 V. Bike type, rim size and whether you already have a suitable battery matter most. Kits rated above 250 W are not road-legal under EU rules.

E-bike conversion kits

For hills, mid-drive kits are a good fit; they replace the 68–73 mm bottom bracket. The motor drives the chain, so it also uses the gears. They include a 36, 42 or 44-tooth chainring and, depending on the version, a cadence sensor or a torque sensor.

Easier to fit are hub motor kits. The motor is laced into a 26, 27.5, 28 or 29-inch rim, so you simply swap the whole wheel. Rear kits are mostly for cassettes, some for screw-on freewheels, and front motor kits are available too. For some, the manufacturer quotes 65 Nm of torque.

The kits include a display, some with Bluetooth, usually a throttle and often brake sensors that cut the motor when braking. Only a few kits with a battery (624 to 1440 Wh) are available; the rest need a battery with the same voltage. In the EU, only an e-bike up to 250 W with pedal-only assistance up to 25 km/h counts as a bicycle; stronger kits and kits with a throttle may fall into another vehicle category.
