Overview
Hawthorn Seeds Crataegus monogyna 5 pcs medicinal tree with white flowers and red fruits for planting hedges

A packet of 5 seeds of Crataegus monogyna is suitable for home gardeners who wish to grow a few of their own seedlings of this traditional European tree for pleasure. Crataegus monogyna is one of the native species of Czech nature, where it has grown in the wild landscape, on the edges of forests and field margins since ancient times. Its presence plays a significant role in folk medicine as well as in gastronomy, and it is now sought after for its value to wildlife and insects.

The species name monogyna refers to a characteristic feature of this plant – each fruit contains only a single seed, easily distinguishing it from related species with multiple stones. The tree forms a dense bush or small tree with thorny branches and deeply lobed, palmate leaves with serrated edges. The flowers have creamy white petals with bright pink to purplish anthers that protrude from a yellow-green centre. The fruits ripen in September to a dark red colour and often remain on the branches until the first winter frosts.

The seeds require stratification before sowing, which involves storing them in moist sand or peat at around 4 °C for three to four months. Home growers most commonly choose a simple method of autumn sowing in a smaller pot placed outside under shelter over the winter. Germination usually occurs in the spring of the second year, sometimes not until the third year, so patience in cultivation is essential. The young seedling is transplanted to a permanent location after the second growing season when it has already developed a solid root structure.

The fruits of the single-seeded hawthorn are traditionally used in the preparation of tinctures, teas, syrups, and jams popular in folk phytotherapy for supporting the cardiovascular system. The tree is renowned for its incredible longevity – some specimens in England are said to exceed 400 years of age. For successful germination, it is essential to adhere to the cool stratification phase and keep the substrate evenly moist throughout.
