Overview
Hawthorn Seed Crataegus monogyna 20 pcs Deciduous Tree with White Flowers for Establishing Hedges and Supporting Pollinators

A medium-sized packet of twenty seeds of the single-seeded hawthorn is perfect for gardeners who wish to transform a piece of their land into a refuge for wildlife. Crataegus monogyna is one of the key trees for creating so-called bird gardens – its dense thorny branching provides a safe nesting site for small songbirds, and its fruits are highly sought after by birds. Twenty quality seeds allow for a safeguard against natural losses during germination and, in the long term, enable the cultivation of a sufficient group of functional seedlings.

The single-seeded hawthorn often combines with other shrubs in the wild, such as blackthorn, rosehip, hazel, or spindle, forming typical belts of shrub layers at the forest edge. Flower clusters usually appear at the end of May and are characterised by a high visitation from insects – a single flowering shrub can host dozens of bumblebees, solitary bees, butterflies, and hoverflies in a day. In September, small shiny red haws resembling miniature apples appear among the leaves, which often remain on the shrub well into the winter period. Both flowering and fruiting hawthorn are therefore a permanent part of natural gardens aimed at supporting small fauna.

Before sowing, it is necessary to subject the seeds to combined stratification – first a warm phase lasting approximately twelve weeks, followed by a cold phase for sixteen to twenty weeks. A practical alternative is the so-called winter sowing in a shallow container or bowl with sandy loam substrate, which is placed in a sheltered outdoor spot with an eastern exposure. To accelerate the process, scarification of the seed is recommended, which involves slight mechanical disruption of the shell with a fine file or sandpaper. Germination is irregular for this species, and twenty seeds provide a statistically sufficient reserve for obtaining quality seedlings.

Growing twenty seedlings provides material for establishing a group planting, mixed hedge, or solitary plants placed in various locations in the garden according to the cultivation plan. In culinary preparations, the fruits of the single-seeded hawthorn are harvested after the first morning frosts, when they lose their initial tartness and acquire a sweeter taste suitable for making fruit spreads, fruit wines, or candied treats. From the flowers and dried fruits, a traditional herbal tea is also prepared, used in folk medicine to support heart function and reduce nervous tension. Although growing from seed is a longer path, the resulting tree has a deep root system and shows higher adaptability to local conditions than seedlings from grafting.
