Overview
Wide Gouge Chisel 15 mm with Curved Blade and Forged Bent Blade in Wooden Handle for Mallet Work on Wood Roughing

The wide gouge chisel with a blade width of 15 mm is primarily intended for roughing, which is the first stage of carving, where larger amounts of material are removed from a block of wood to create the basic shape. The curved profile of the blade engages a wider strip of wood, allowing work to progress faster than with narrower chisels. The blade is hand-forged, widening from the narrower neck and is slightly curved. The chisel comes sharpened and fitted with a handle. It is useful for working on larger sculptures, bowls, reliefs, and wooden decorations. The wider blade also helps to create evenly rounded surfaces, which can then be refined with finer tools.

The cylindrical wooden handle provides a firm grip when guiding the cut by hand or when working with a mallet. The joint between the blade and the handle is reinforced with a metal conical transition. The chisel is designed for mallet strikes, which significantly accelerate wood removal during roughing. Therefore, the manufacturer intentionally fits the handle with a slight play to ensure it settles more firmly with tapping during work. Any small gap at the handle upon unboxing is thus a part of the construction, not a defect. Additionally, the curved blade facilitates work in recesses and hollowing, where a straight chisel might hit the surrounding material with the handle.

Before starting work, securely clamp the workpiece to prevent it from moving during mallet strikes. Remove wood gradually in layers and guide the chisel as much as possible along the grain to avoid tearing the surface unnecessarily. You can then refine the rough shapes with narrower tools. After work, clean the blade of sawdust and resin and wipe it dry. For longer storage, treat it with a thin layer of oil and protect the blade from contact with other tools. Regular honing will keep the blade in good condition.

The gouge chisel with a width of 15 mm will be appreciated by anyone who needs to quickly and efficiently rough out the basic shape of carving. The curved blade, forged bent blade, and wooden handle designed for mallet strikes make it a working tool for the more demanding part of carving work. It arrives sharpened and ready for use. It is suitable for carvers working on larger projects as well as for DIY enthusiasts. It complements narrower chisels well, with which details can then be refined.
