Overview
Stirling Engine Functional Model of a Hot Air Engine with External Combustion 16.5 x 8.5 cm Aluminium and Quartz Glass Silver Physics Experiment

The functional model of the Stirling engine clearly demonstrates how heat can be converted into motion without combustion inside the cylinder. The external combustion engine is mounted on a base made of aluminium alloy and its hot cylinder is formed by a test tube made of quartz glass, which is heated by the flame of the alcohol burner. Simply light the burner, allow the cylinder to warm up for about a minute, and gently spin the flywheel; the engine will then continue to turn on its own as long as there is a heat source. This model is suitable for physics experiments in schools and at home, for those interested in technology, and as a gift for collectors of mechanical models. The construction is metallic, silver, and disassemblable, allowing you to examine the individual parts and understand how they work together.

The principle of the Stirling engine lies in the heating and cooling of enclosed air. The warm air in the glass cylinder expands and pushes on the piston of the working cylinder, which rotates the flywheel with a diameter of 49.43 mm via the connecting rod. The flywheel, through the movement of another piston, shifts the air back to the cooler part, where the air contracts, and the entire cycle repeats continuously. The mechanism is exposed, making it easy to observe the movement of the pistons, connecting rods, and the flywheel. The explanation of heat engines is therefore much clearer than a diagram in a textbook, and the model also serves as a technical decoration on a desk or in a library.

  • Type – functional model of a Stirling engine with external combustion
  • Design – without generator and without lighting
  • Base material – aluminium alloy
  • Hot cylinder – quartz glass with a diameter of 15.9 mm
  • Working cylinder – diameter 21.5 mm
  • Flywheel – diameter 49.43 mm
  • Base dimensions – 16.5 x 8.5 cm
  • Heat source – alcohol burner, preferably with 95% purity alcohol
  • Recommended age – from 14 years
  • Contents of the package – Stirling engine model on an aluminium base and alcohol burner without fuel

Before the first operation, turn the flywheel by hand and ensure that it turns easily and smoothly, and check that the sliding parts are clean. Fill the burner no more than two-thirds full, position the flame towards the front of the glass test tube, and after about a minute of heating, spin the flywheel. It is advisable to occasionally lightly lubricate both ends of the connecting rod, but the piston itself should not be lubricated. During operation, do not touch the heated test tube or the metal parts connected to it, and take care that the wick of the burner does not touch the glass.

The Stirling engine without a generator is suitable for anyone who wants to see the principle of a heat engine in action with their own eyes. The aluminium base, glass cylinder, and metal parts make it a model that stands up well in a school laboratory or on a desk. It is powered by a simple alcohol burner, so it does not require batteries or a plug socket. It is suitable for students, physics teachers, and technical enthusiasts, and is intended for users aged 14 years and older. As a gift, it will delight anyone who enjoys mechanics, experiments, and collecting functional models.
