The jin pliers have narrow pointed jaws with a grooved inner surface. They are used for stripping bark and wood fibres while creating jins and shari, which are dry, bark-free parts of branches and trunks, and also for bending, tightening, and unwinding wire. The wire cutters have short rounded jaws that allow you to cut shaping wire as close to the branch as possible. When removing wire, you can cut it into pieces rather than unwinding it from the branch, thus reducing the risk of damaging the bark and young shoots.

Remove wire in a timely manner, before it begins to embed into the bark, and cut it into short sections. When creating jin, first make incisions in the bark and then gradually strip it off with the pliers. After use, wipe the tools clean of sap, dry them, and store them in a dry place. You can occasionally lubricate the joints with a drop of oil. Use the cutters only on shaping wire of appropriate thickness and do not cut harder materials with them to avoid damaging the blades. Conversely, the jin pliers are also useful for tightening the ends of wire that stick out from the branch after wiring. Both tools fit into a standard case or toolbox, keeping them handy for every repotting and shaping task.
