Five metres of dual-wall heat shrink tubing with hot-melt adhesive is a handy supply for anyone who insulates joints of thicker wires. Before shrinking the tubing has an inner diameter of 8 mm and with a shrink ratio of 4:1 it narrows down to 2 mm when heated. The adhesive on the inner wall melts with heat, wraps the wire and the joint and fills small gaps. After cooling, a firm cover is formed that insulates the joint and protects it against water, salt and corrosion. A length of 5 m is enough for dozens of joints.

The design has two layers. The polyolefin outer layer protects the joint against abrasion and mechanical damage, while the inner adhesive provides sealing and reinforces the joint. The total wall thickness after shrinking is approximately 1.2 mm and the adhesive layer takes up about 0.5 mm. The material is self-extinguishing. The 8 mm diameter suits thicker power cables, cable lugs, larger connectors and crimp connectors. The five-metre pack will be appreciated by auto electricians, service shops, DIYers and owners of boats and caravans who modify wiring more often.

The longer length also pays off when wiring new accessories such as auxiliary lights, a tow bar, a car radio, a charger or a power inverter, where several joints need to be treated at once.

Cut the tubing into pieces slightly longer than the joint and slide one piece onto the wire before joining. Solder or crimp the joint, slide the tubing over it and heat it with a heat gun all around. The adhesive starts to melt from 100 °C and once it appears at the edges, the joint is sealed. Work from the middle towards the ends so that no air bubbles remain inside. Do not move the cable until the tubing has completely cooled and the adhesive has hardened. A waterproof joint is ideal for vehicle lighting, underbody wiring, solar panels and outdoor sockets.

Dual-wall adhesive tubing with an 8 mm diameter insulates and seals joints of thicker cables. The inner hot-melt adhesive protects the joint against moisture and reinforces it against pulling and vibration. The 5 m pack is enough for a number of repairs and new installations. The black polyolefin jacket looks neat on wiring. The tubing belongs in the workshop, the car and the boat.
