Overview
Equatorial Sundial DIY Wooden Kit 10 x 10 x 11 cm 24 Hour Dial and Latitude Scale Educational Model for Children

The equatorial sundial in the form of a wooden kit is a practical tool that vividly demonstrates how people have determined time by the Sun for centuries. The kit is made from natural wood and all parts are pre-cut on a single board, so they can be carefully removed and assembled together according to the pictures. The finished model measures approximately 10 x 10 x 11 cm and fits on a work desk, shelf, or windowsill. Assembling it develops fine motor skills, spatial imagination, and patience. The kit is suitable for teaching natural sciences, geography, and physics, as well as for a creative activity on a free afternoon.

The main part of the model is a round dial with a 24-hour scale and fine divisions, through which a wooden stick serves as the shadow indicator. The dial is mounted in rotating holders, allowing it to be tilted according to the semicircular latitude scale from 0 to 90 degrees. This way, the plane of the dial is set parallel to the equator, and the shadow of the stick then indicates solar time. The base is engraved with a compass rose, which helps orient the sundial to the north. The model thus clearly connects astronomy, geometry, and time measurement in one simple device.

  • Type – equatorial sundial as a kit for self-assembly
  • Material – wood
  • Dimensions of the assembled model – approximately 10 x 10 x 11 cm
  • Dial – round with a 24-hour scale
  • Angle Adjustment – according to the latitude scale from 0 to 90°
  • Orientation – engraved compass rose on the base
  • Processing – parts pre-cut on a single wooden board
  • Contents of the package – wooden board with cut-out parts (dial, base, latitude scale, and holders), wooden stick as a shadow indicator, and small metal connecting parts

Place the finished sundial on a flat surface where direct sunlight falls during the day, orient it using the compass rose to the north, and tilt the dial according to the latitude of the location where it is used. For the Czech Republic, this is approximately 49 to 51 degrees. You can then read the time according to the shadow of the stick on the dial scale and compare it with regular clocks. Protect the model from rain and moisture; dust can be wiped off with a dry cloth.

The wooden equatorial sundial combines creativity with learning and shows that time can be measured without batteries and electronics. The compact model with a tilting dial is useful in schools, in science clubs, and at home for joint creative activities between parents and children. Thanks to the latitude scale, you can set the sundial for the location where it is currently used. As a gift, it will delight curious children, students, and adults interested in astronomy and the history of time measurement. The assembled model also serves as an original table decoration made from natural materials.
