Overview
Equatorial Sundial DIY Kit 9 x 9 x 7.5 cm 24-Hour Dial Latitude Scale and Compass Educational Model for Teaching

The equatorial sundial in the form of a kit provides a simple and comprehensible way to introduce both children and adults to measuring time by the Sun. Once assembled, it forms a compact model measuring approximately 9 x 9 x 7.5 cm, which can fit on a writing desk, shelf, or windowsill. The package also includes a small magnetic compass, which allows you to easily orient the sundial towards the north. Assembling the model exercises fine motor skills, spatial imagination, and the ability to follow instructions. This kit is suitable for natural science, geography, and physics lessons, for science clubs, and for creative activities at home.

The main part of the model is a round dial with a 24-hour scale, through which a rod serves as a shadow indicator. In addition to numbers from 0 to 23, the dial also features traditional Chinese characters and an inscription indicating the northern hemisphere for which the model is intended. Next to the dial stands a semicircular latitude scale divided from 0 to 90 degrees, which is used to set the tilt of the dial. Thus, the plane of the dial lies parallel to the plane of the equator, and the shadow of the rod moves evenly along the scale throughout the day. The model thereby effectively connects astronomy, geometry, and the history of time measurement.

  • Type – equatorial sundial as a kit for self-assembly
  • Dimensions of the assembled model – approximately 9 x 9 x 7.5 cm
  • Dial – round with a scale of 0 to 23 hours and Chinese characters
  • Latitude scale – semicircular divided from 0 to 90°
  • Shadow indicator – rod passing through the centre of the dial
  • Orientation – magnetic compass located on the base
  • Suitable for – teaching natural sciences, science clubs, and home crafting
  • Contents – parts of the sundial for assembly (base, dial, latitude scale, and supports), rod as a shadow indicator, and compass

Place the assembled sundial on a horizontal surface where direct sunlight shines during the day, and orient it using the compass so that the rod points north. Then tilt the dial according to the latitude of the location where you are using the sundial; in the Czech Republic, this is approximately 49 to 51 degrees. You can read the time according to the shadow of the rod on the scale of the dial and compare it with standard clocks, revealing the difference between solar time and civil time. Store the model in a dry place and away from rain; dust can be easily wiped off with a dry cloth.

The small equatorial sundial combines creativity with learning and shows that time can be measured without batteries or electronics. Thanks to the latitude scale, you can set it for the location where it is currently used, and with the compass, you can quickly orient it correctly. It serves as an educational tool in schools, as an interesting project for science clubs, and as a creative activity for parents with children. As a small gift, it will delight curious schoolchildren and adults interested in astronomy. The finished model with a 24-hour dial also serves as an original decoration for a workspace.
