Overview
5 mm Gouging Chisel with Curved Blade and Forged Steel in Wooden Handle for Carving Ornaments and Reliefs in Wood

The chisel with a curved blade, measuring 5 mm in width, is one of the tools that carvers reach for when decorating the surface of wood. The gouging profile of the blade leaves smooth rounded traces in the material, from which ornaments, floral motifs, smaller reliefs, and decorative edges are formed. The blade width is sufficiently narrow for details, while allowing for the removal of more material than the narrowest chisels. The blade is hand-forged and expands from a narrower neck to the edge. The tool comes sharpened and with the handle fitted, so it is ready for use. Due to its smaller width, it is easy to control even when working on smaller items, where it is necessary to guide the blade with care and in small increments.

The cylindrical wooden handle fits comfortably in the hand and allows for precise pressure control when making cuts. At the junction between the blade and the handle is a metal conical neck that reinforces the connection. The chisel is also designed for use with a mallet. The handle is intentionally fitted by the manufacturer with a slight play, as it gradually settles more firmly with tapping during use. Therefore, if you notice a small gap at the handle after unpacking, this is intentional and the tool is in order. The slightly curved blade aids in hollowing out depressions, as the hand with the handle remains above the surface of the workpiece.

The best results are achieved when guiding the chisel along the grain and removing material gradually. Wood can easily tear against the grain, so it is advisable to examine the grain pattern before the first cut. Tap evenly with the mallet and hold the tool firmly in hand. After use, clean the blade of shavings and resin and wipe it dry. Before storing, you can treat it with a drop of oil to protect the edge from impacts with other tools. Regular honing of the edge will maintain a clean and smooth cut and reduce effort during work.

The gouging chisel with a width of 5 mm is a handy assistant for anyone who embellishes wood and refines details. The curved blade, forged steel, and wooden handle allow for work by hand as well as with a mallet. The tool comes sharpened, so you can use it immediately. It is suitable for carving ornaments, motifs on boxes, frames, spoons, and small sculptures. It reliably complements the toolset of both novice and advanced carvers.
