Overview
Seeds of Ebony Tree Diospyros ebenum 5 pcs Rare Tropical Tree with Green Fruits for Indoor Cultivation and Collector's Collections

This small package contains 5 seeds of the ebony tree (Diospyros ebenum), a tropical tree native to South Asia and surrounding islands. The species is primarily known for its exceptionally hard and dark heartwood, which gave rise to the very term ebony. In nature, this hardwood grows slowly, gradually forming a neatly shaped crown with smaller green, leathery leaves. Seeds of this species are rarely found in cultivation collections, making it a truly collectible piece for enthusiasts of rare tropical trees. Growing from seed is a long-term project that allows you to observe all stages of growth from the first sprout to a young hardwood.

Preparing the seeds is crucial for success with this species — we recommend soaking the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours and possibly lightly mechanically scarifying the harder ones with a file. Sow in a deep container with a well-draining substrate based on peat and coarse sand, to a depth of approximately one centimetre. Germination occurs best at temperatures of 25 to 28 °C and higher humidity, ideally in a mini greenhouse or under a transparent lid. Germination time can be longer, often several weeks to months, so patience is necessary, and the substrate must be kept slightly moist throughout this period. Young seedlings have a relatively long taproot, so it is advisable to transplant them into deeper containers as soon as possible, where the root has enough space.

Growing the ebony tree is one of the more challenging cultivation projects, yet it brings joy from a truly unique plant. A home-grown ebony tree in European conditions will not reach its natural size, but it can still be a valuable element in a collection of tropical hardwoods or as a base for bonsai shaping. In cooler climates, the plant thrives exclusively indoors or in a heated greenhouse, where it has ample warmth, light, and moisture throughout the year. A set of five seeds represents a reasonable amount for a one-off cultivation attempt, with the understanding that the success rate of germination may be lower for this species and requires patience. The collectible value of this hardwood remains the main reason why enthusiasts of tropical plants try their hand at sowing.
