Overview
Seeds of Dalbergia sissoo 100 pcs Indian Shisham tree with a broad crown for large-scale cultivation and commercial timber production

Large pack of one hundred seeds of the tropical tree Dalbergia sissoo is designed for professional growers, forestry companies, and coordinators of reforestation projects who plan extensive production of seedlings of this economically significant timber species. The shisham species represents one of the most important tropical trees in the world with an annual turnover in the Indian timber industry exceeding billions of dollars. One hundred quality seeds allow for raising enough seedlings to establish a production field or arboretum with Asian timber species. For buyers, this pack offers savings on seed prices compared to smaller packages.

The wood of the Dalbergia sissoo species has a density of 770 to 860 kg/m³ and upon drying acquires a characteristic reddish-brown colour with darker streaks, similar to related species of rosewood. In Indian craftsmanship, it is used to make furniture, musical instruments, decorative items, agricultural tools, and column building elements. The tree reaches maturity for furniture production at the age of 30 to 50 years depending on size requirements. In agricultural systems, shisham is also planted as a shade tree in tea, cocoa, and coffee plantations at altitudes of 600 to 1500 metres above sea level.

For mass sowing of one hundred seeds, it is advisable to split the batch into two sowing periods during March and April for staggered seedling maturation. Pre-sowing treatment of the seeds includes soaking in warm water for 24 hours and a brief scraping of the seed coat with a file. The seeds are sown in well-draining substrate with a pH of 5.5 to 7.5 at a depth of 1.5 centimetres with a spacing of 5 centimetres. Germination at a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius reaches 65 to 85 percent within 2 to 5 weeks. Seedlings grow rapidly and reach a height of 25 to 40 centimetres after 3 months. Young plants require consistent warmth and a sunny location.

Shisham holds significant importance in Indian culture and its wood is used in the production of traditional musical instruments such as sitars, tanpuras, and tablas. The species supports biodiversity in the vicinity of cultivation areas and provides shelter for birds and insects. For successful production in greenhouses, we recommend a warmed environment with temperatures of 18 to 30 degrees Celsius and high air humidity around 60 to 70 percent. The annual growth of young plants in ideal conditions reaches 100 to 150 centimetres, making it one of the fastest-growing hardwood species in the world.
