Overview
Seeds of Broadleaf Dalbergia Dalbergia latifolia 100 pcs Indian Rosewood with Green Leaves for Cultivation Collections and Tropical Nurseries

A larger pack of one hundred seeds of Broadleaf Dalbergia is assembled for botanical gardens, research institutions, and tropical nurseries working with endangered tree species. Dalbergia latifolia represents one of the most valuable timber trees in the world and due to its high value, it has been intensively logged in its native range. One hundred seeds allow for the cultivation of enough seedlings to participate in international reforestation projects aimed at restoring populations of this rare timber species. In India, government programmes are underway to plant new plantations to ensure sustainable production.

Indian Rosewood has dual cultural and economic significance – in addition to timber production, it serves as an important element of traditional agroforestry systems. In Indian villages, the tree is planted at the edges of fields and along paths for shading, nitrogen fixation in the soil, and erosion protection. The roots of Dalbergia contain nodules with bacteria that fix atmospheric nitrogen, thereby improving soil fertility in the vicinity. Young leaves serve as quality fodder for livestock during the summer months. Traditional medicine in Ayurveda utilises the bark and roots of the tree.

For mass sowing of one hundred seeds, a two-phase pre-sowing treatment is recommended – first, 24 hours of soaking in hot water (75 to 80 °C) followed by another 24 hours in cold water for embryo hydration. Seeds should be sown to a depth of 1.5 to 2 centimetres in seed trays with peat-based substrate at a temperature of 26 to 30 degrees Celsius. Germination occurs in 3 to 6 weeks and germination rates for quality fresh seeds reach 50 to 75 percent. From a pack of one hundred seeds, it is realistic to cultivate 40 to 70 healthy seedlings suitable for further cultivation in tropical conditions.

  • 100 pcs of Dalbergia latifolia seeds

Growing one hundred seedlings of Indian Rosewood provides a sufficient basis for the restoration of smaller populations of this tropical tree within conservation projects. The wood of Broadleaf Dalbergia has a density of 770 to 870 kg/m³ and upon drying, it acquires the typical resonance used in luthiery for making guitars and violins. For successful cultivation in a European greenhouse, we recommend a heated tropical greenhouse with a temperature of 18 to 30 °C, high air humidity, and composted soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.5.
